MINDFULNESS IN THE CLASSROOM

This film was a partnership between Champlain College and the South Burlington Wellness and Resilience Program, and features Chamberlin teachers, Kathy Buley (third grade) and Dean Melen (guidance).

ROCK OUR WORLD AT CHAMBERLIN SCHOOL

The fourth grade students in Mr. Provost's class participated in Rock Our World, an international project involving 43 schools around the world from six continents.  This project focused on healthy eating and sustainability.  The students came up with solutions on how healthy eating can reduce their carbon footprint.  They created weekly Garageband music with Ms. Matthews, researched the new Food Plate, and listened and learned while a sustainability educator from Shelburne Farms spoke to them about the food groups and sustainability. Our own school nurse, Mrs. Farrell spoke to the students about the Food Plate and the importance of balanced nutritious meals.
In order to teach the Chamberlin community the benefits of healthy eating, the students baked enough bread to serve to our entire school population during lunch.  It is our hope that they continue this service learning monthly.  They also made reusable lunch sacks that will be sold during parent/teacher conferences and the Scholastic Book Fair next week.

Chamberlin students reflect on their work creating a healthy, more sustainable place to live in South Burlington while reducing their carbon footprint.

The music video below, "The Life We Got" is a production by the band Alma Desnuda that was written just for Rock Our World.  You will see the students' contributions with their vocal tracks and their video clips.  Look for Vermont and our students!

The video below was created by one of the teachers and highlights all the locations in the world where the students who participated in Rock Our World are located.  Look for Vermont!

UVM Outstanding Teacher of the Year...Mrs. McKegney!

For thirty years, UVM’s College of Education and Social Services and VT Supervisory Unions & School Districts have joined to honor outstanding teachers.  All outstanding teachers exemplify one or more of the Five Standards for Vermont Educators – learning, professional knowledge, advocacy, colleagueship, and accountability.  Suzanne McKegney, 5th grade teacher at Chamberlin School, was chosen as the South Burlington School District Outstanding Teacher of the Year.  Suzanne is known for her commitment to students, dedication to families, and excellence in teaching.  She was honored at an awards ceremony at the University of Vermont on October 19th.  Congratulations, Mrs. McKegney!

Chamberlin Harvest Festival

On October 8, many Chamberlin families celebrated friendship, fun, food, and family activities on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon at Chamberlin School.  Here is a video of some of the excitement and enjoyment that everyone shared together.

Chamberlin Students "Making their Mark" to create a better world!

Chamberlin Hurricane Relief Collection

Many of our VT neighbors experienced great loss from the impact of Tropical Storm Irene.  In response, Chamberlin families donated food, toiletries, and pet supplies to benefit the Waterbury Food Shelf.  Pictured here is Mrs. Simpson's 2nd grade class with the donated items.  Thank you to our guidance counselor, Mr. Melen, for organizing this wonderful community connection!

4th Grade Rain Garden

4th graders in Mr. Provost's class, Mrs. Detterman's class, and Mrs. Tan's class worked with Justin Kenney from the Chittenden County Stream Team to create a rain garden.  This garden, in front of the school, will absorb up to 2 inches of stormwater run off from our school roof.  Rain gardens improve water quality and prevent erosion.  What a great learning experience for their science unit, Land and Water!

First Day at Chamberlin
